SD 9 Special Election

The election of Congresswoman-elect Jennifer McClellan (D-Richmond) has triggered a March 21 special election. The flash election will be held in the old district lines of SD 9, which were in place before the Supreme Court of Virginia drew new district boundaries to be used in general elections this November 2021.

Three Democrats will compete in a firehouse primary this Sunday. The candidates are Del. Lamont Bagby (D-Richmond), Del. Dawn Adams (D-Richmond) and Alexsis Rodgers.  Republicans have until Monday to pick a candidate.

The old SD 9 includes portions of the counties of Hanover, Henrico and Charles City, and part of the City of Richmond.VPAP rates the district strongly Democratic. Democrats won early three of every four votes cast in SD9 during congressional midterms last fall.

Two months after the March 21 special election, the winner  will run in a June 20 primary in SD 14, which includes most of Richmond and a portion of Henrico County. Democrat Katie Gooch is the first candidate to announce for the new district.

General Elections

State Senate

Senate District 27

Joel Griffin is the third candidate seeking the Democratic nomination. There are two Republicans vying for the GOP nomination and one independent candidate. SD27 includes all of Fredericksburg and portions of Stafford and Spotsylvania counties. VPAP rates this a “leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Younkgin won an estimated 53.8% of the vote in the November 2021 governor's race.

Senate District 35

VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 65.3% of the vote in November 2021.

House of Delegates

House District 7

The longest serving delegate, Del. Ken Plum (D-Reston), announced he would not seek re-election. This opened the floodgates for Democrats seeking the nomination in a district that VPAP rates “strong Democratic.” Democrats Mary Barthelson, Paul Berry, John Farrell, and Shyamali Hauth are running. So far, no Republican candidate has announced. In November 2021, Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 69.2% of the vote in the district that includes part of Fairfax County.

House District 54

Former Charlottesville Mayor David Brown (D) withdrew this week. Four other candidates had already announced that they would seek the Democratic nomination in the district that includes Charlottesville and part of Albemarle County. VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 79.2% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 65

Lee Peters is the first Republican candidate running. Former Del. Joshua Cole (D) is also running. HD 56 includes Fredericksburg and portions of Stafford and Spotsylvania counties. VPAP rates this a "competitive" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 51% of the vote last November.

House District 69

Del. Mike Mullin (D-Newport News) announced this week that he would not seek re-election. Republican Chad Green had already announced he would run in the district that includes part of Newport News and portions of Gloucester, James City, and York counties. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 55.9% of the vote last November.

House District 78

Del. Jeff Bourne (D-Richmond) announced he would not seek re-election, leaving Del. Betsy Carr (D-Richmond) as the only candidate running in the district that includes part of Richmond. (A third incumbent assigned to the district, Del. Dawn Adams, is currently running in a Senate special election.) VPAP rates this a "strong Democratic" district where Democrat Terry McAuliffe won an estimated 69.2% of the vote in November 2021.

House District 100

Del. Tim Anderson (R-Virginia Beach) announced he would not seek re-election. He had been paired in this district with fellow Republican Del. Rob Bloxom  (R-Accomack), who so far is the only remaining candidate. HD100 includes all of the Eastern Shore (Accomack and Northampton) and a portion of Virginia Beach. VPAP rates this a "leans Republican" district where Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin won an estimated 58% of the vote last November.
